Admission: I don’t really understand how the Fed works

January 28th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I was trying to explain why the interest rate on my savings account dropped the day after I opened my new online savings account, and how it was directly rated to the fact the Fed cut interest rates. Since I couldn’t offer a cohesive explanation of why, that means I don’t really understand it myself.
So I’ve started [...]

What’s the worst that can happen?

January 10th, 2008 · No Comments

I turned in my resignation from my job last week but have offered to help out for a bit longer than usual, so that I can tie up some loose ends, and so that my employer has a chance to find a replacement for me. As the news has spread to my colleagues, it is [...]

Revenue update

January 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments

In November 07 my sites generated $0.04 per day. This corresponds to yearly salary of $14.60, which would be bad even in any third world county, I guess.
In December 07 my sites earned $ 0.09 per day. Not much money at all, but the growth rate of 125% is excellent.

Why I hate my job

December 5th, 2007 · No Comments

The management didn’t make any kind of announcement, and they seemed pleased to have his head count out off their books. He hadn’t been planning to retire, but they offered an early retirement package, which he accepted.

Insurance, risk, and compensation

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

One reason why I decided to quit my corporate job, is that I have a valuable asset, which I am not taking advantage of. This asset is risk tolerance.
I work at a huge, stable global corporation. The risk that my company will not send me my paycheck each month is essentially zero. My paycheck is [...]

Losing my 401k match

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

I determined that I can likely make significantly more money working on websites than I can with my corporate job. One major point of concern for me which has prevented me from getting started right away is my unvested 401k match.
Next year in September, my retirement account through work completely vests. Right now my unvested [...]

Compensation

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

Creating wealth (or even just an income to get by) is about resource allocation. That is in fact the essence of economics, the systems by which resources are allocated. For corporations the two main resources are labor and capital. Labor has a cost in terms of wages, and capital has a cost (opportunity cost when [...]

The rough business plan

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

Yesterday was the first day back from vacation, and I’m really looking forward to quitting my job now. It looks like I have lots of travel scheduled in the coming weeks, so my job is going to eat into my free time as well. I will enjoy being out of the office though. I guess [...]
